Building a better business using the LEGO SERIOUS PLAY

Screen Shot 2558-09-11 at 3.42.02 AM

Unleash innovation potential with creative, serious play

Building a Better Business Using the LEGO(R) SERIOUS PLAY(R) Method delivers a creative approach to enhancing innovation and improving business performance, with the focus on unleashing play. Written by the two original Master Trainers for LEGO SERIOUS PLAY (LSP), the book outlines how LSP can develop teams, people, relationships and business . Based on the merging of play with organizational development, systems thinking and strategy development, LSP can foster improved meetings, faster innovation processes, team growth, and better communication.

The belief that everyone intends to “do good” and has the potential to do it is at the heart of LSP. The method nurtures the idea that everyone in an organization can contribute to discussions and outcomes. Building with LEGO bricks is a type of creative play that triggers a different kind of thought process, unleashing imagination and potential that is frequently untapped by the logical mind. The book explains this hands-on, minds-on approach, and discusses the theory as well as the practical implementation of LSP. Topics include: * Observation of internal and external interaction dynamics * Fostering a free and honest exchange of opinions * Suspending hierarchy for better, more effective communication * Facilitating change by encouraging exploration

The LEGO SERIOUS PLAY method is employed by start-ups and multinational corporations alike to maximize synergy among teams and throughout organizations. For leaders looking to boost effectiveness and see better results, Building a Better Business Using the LEGO(R) SERIOUS PLAY(R) Method is a comprehensive introduction to this creative management technique.

In this new resource the author selected topics for those fairly new to the field and synthesizes a wealth of information into one concise text. The book starts with a focus on instructional technology, then shifts to human performance technology. You’ll learn about ideas of prominent thinkers like Edward Thorndike, B. F. Skinner, and Benjamin Samuel Bloom, and you’ll also have access to extensive references and user-friendly charts.

How to Create and Use Rubrics

Screen Shot 2558-09-11 at 3.35.32 AM

What is a rubric? A rubric is a coherent set of criteria for student work that describes levels of performance quality. Sounds simple enough, right? Unfortunately, rubrics are commonly misunderstood and misused.
The good news is that when rubrics are created and used correctly, they are strong tools that support and enhance classroom instruction and student learning. In this comprehensive guide, author Susan M. Brookhart identifies two essential components of effective rubrics: (1) criteria that relate to the learning (not the tasks ) that students are being asked to demonstrate and (2) clear descriptions of performance across a continuum of quality. She outlines the difference between various kinds of rubrics (for example, general versus task-specific, and analytic versus holistic), explains when using each type of rubric is appropriate, and highlights examples from all grade levels and assorted content areas. In addition, Brookhart addresses
* Common misconceptions about rubrics;
* Important differences between rubrics and other assessment tools such as checklists and rating scales, and when such alternatives can be useful; and
* How to use rubrics for formative assessment and grading, including standards-based grading and report card grades.

Intended for educators who are already familiar with rubrics as well as those who are not, this book is a complete resource for writing effective rubrics and for choosing wisely from among the many rubrics that are available on the Internet and from other sources. And it makes the case that rubrics, when used appropriately, can improve outcomes by helping teachers teach and helping students learn.

Embedded Formative Assessment

Screen Shot 2558-09-11 at 3.35.07 AM

If we are to maintain our status as one of the world’s leading economies and secure our economic futures, and if we want our students to thrive in the impossibly complex, unpredictable world of the 21st century, we must concentrate on increasing educational achievement by increasing the quality of the teachers in our schools. The author faces this challenge head-on by making a case for the important role of formative assessment in increasing teacher quality and student learning.

Formative assessment plays an important role in increasing teacher quality and student learning when it’s viewed as a process rather than a tool. Emphasizing the instructional side of formative assessment, this book explores in-depth the use of classroom questioning, learning intentions and success criteria, feedback, collaborative and cooperative learning, and self-regulated learning to engineer effective learning environments for students.

Benefits

* Presents five key strategies with research evidence to show the impact of each

* Includes over 50 practical techniques for classroom formative assessment

Student Engagement Techniques

Screen Shot 2558-09-11 at 3.33.51 AM

Keeping students involved, motivated, and actively learning is challenging educators across the country, yet good advice on how to accomplish this has not been readily available. Student Engagement Techniques is a comprehensive resource that offers college teachers a dynamic model for engaging students and includes over one hundred tips, strategies, and techniques that have been proven to help teachers from a wide variety of disciplines and institutions motivate and connect with their students. The ready-to-use format shows how to apply each of the book’s techniques in the classroom and includes purpose, preparation, procedures, examples, online implementation, variations and extensions, observations and advice, and key resources. “Given the current and welcome surge of interest in improving student learning and success, this guide is a timely and important tool, sharply focused on practical strategies that can really matter.” Kay McClenney, director, Center for Community College Student Engagement, Community College Leadership Program, the University of Texas at Austin “This book is a ‘must’ for every new faculty orientation program; it not only emphasizes the importance of concentrating on what students learn but provides clear steps to prepare and execute an engagement technique. Faculty looking for ideas to heighten student engagement in their courses will find usefultechniques that can be adopted, adapted, extended, or modified.” Bob Smallwood, cocreator of CLASSE (Classroom Survey of Student Engagement) and assistant to the provost for assessment, Office of Institutional Effectiveness, University of Alabama “Elizabeth Barkley’s encyclopedia of active learning techniques (here called SETs) combines both a solid discussion of the research on learning that supports the concept of engagement and real-life examples of these approaches to teaching in action.” James Rhem, executive editor, The National Teaching & Learning Forum

Motivation and Learning Strategies for College Success

Screen Shot 2558-09-11 at 3.33.14 AM

This popular text combines theory, research, and applications to teach college students how to become more self-regulated learners. Study skills are treated as a serious academic course of study. Students learn about human motivation and learning as they improve their study skills. The focus is on relevant information and features designed to help students to identify the components of academic learning that contribute to high achievement, to master and practice effective learning and study strategies, and then to complete self-regulation studies whereby they are taught a process for improving their academic behavior. A framework organized around six components related to academic success (motivation, methods of learning, time management, control of the physical and social environment, and monitoring performance) makes it easy for students to understand what they need to do to become more successful in the classroom. Pedagogical Features include Exercises; Follow-Up Activities; Student Reflections; Chapter-end Reviews ; Key Point; and a Glossary.

New in the Fourth Edition: More emphasis on research findings; expanded discussion of motivation ; more emphasis on the impact of students’ use of social networking and technology; research about neuroscience in relationship to motivation and learning; new exercises, including web-based activities; Companion Website, including an Instructor’s Manual
